Domenico 'Domingo' Ghirardelli was born in Rapallo, Italy, in 1817. There, as a child, he learned about making chocolate while working
as an apprentice to a candymaker. At the age of 20 he then moved to South America with his wife to work in the chocolate business.
Upon hearing news of the gold strike at Sutter's Mill, Ghirardelli moved to America, where a series of successes and failures
ultimately led Ghirardelli to the establish his chocolate business D. Ghirardelli & Co. which still provides premium chocolate
today. |
