Philipe Suchard opened a confectioner's business in Neuchatel, Switzerland
in 1824 before establishish his chocolate company in 1826. Suchard Chocolate has been a hit ever since.

In 1826 Suchard designed a new mixing machine that blended sugar and cocoa powder more efficiently than any others.
This machine consisted of a shallow warmed granite dish with granite rollers moving to and fro over it. The basic method is still used today.
Suchard's success didn't happen overnight. Chocolate was expensive and sometimes even viewed with suspicion,
being considered by some people as suspiciously exotic. So, initially, orders were slow. However by a fortunte
quirk of history, as well as being a Swiss canton, Neuchatel also belonged to the King of Prussia
who, in 1842, made a significant purchase of Suchard's chocolate. With this royal vote of confidence the factory took off,
and was soon marketing its output abroad. Suchard chocolate won gold medals at the London's Great Exhibition of 1851
and then at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1855.
Philipe Suchard had other commerical interests, such as the production of silk, macaroni and asphalt.
However he will always be best-known for his premium Swiss chocolate.
